After a delayed launch, FragPunk hits PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on April 29. With cross-play, exclusive rewards, and esports potential, NetEase’s hero shooter is ready to expand.
After a short delay, FragPunk—the chaotic, neon-drenched tactical hero shooter from Bad Guitar Studio and NetEase Games—is finally launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on April 29, 2025. The free-to-play title, which first launched on PC on March 6, has already made waves with its bold gameplay mechanics and a growing competitive scene. The console release was originally delayed due to “unexpected technical challenges” discovered during compliance testing, but developers have now confirmed the issues have been resolved.
As part of the launch announcement, NetEase revealed that console versions will feature cross-play and cross-progression with the PC edition. To ease the frustration caused by the delay, players on console will receive a range of exclusive rewards, including gifts and limited-time event bonuses available from the start of Season 1 up to April 29. Those who purchased the Pioneer Bundle will receive even more in-game goodies, with a detailed breakdown of rewards to be shared prior to launch.

FragPunk’s gameplay sets it apart from traditional tactical shooters. Players engage in 5v5 matches, choosing from 12 unique “Lancers”, each with distinct abilities. The standout feature is its card-based modifier system, where players draw from over 150 “Shard Cards” each round. These cards introduce wild effects, from enlarging players’ heads to removing guns or teleporting enemies. This unpredictable twist makes every match feel fresh and often hilarious—an intentional move to dial down toxicity and create a more relaxed atmosphere.
Despite its quirky mechanics, the game isn’t shying away from serious competition. FragPunk recently made a splash in Twitch Rivals 2025, where prominent esports players like TenZ and Shroud faced off. NetEase has also hinted at plans to further explore competitive play, supported by their history of successful esports titles like Honor of Kings and Marvel Rivals. During an interview, content creator iiTzTimmy commented, “Any 5v5 tactical shooter has esports potential… It’s just about balancing the cards and finding the right game modes.”
The PC version saw a successful start, peaking at over 100,000 concurrent players, but it wasn’t without controversy. The game’s monetization model includes nine in-game currencies, two subscription systems, and a variety of cosmetics, which some players criticized as overly aggressive. However, the gameplay and frequent updates—like new game modes, Lancers, and cards—have kept interest high.

Console players can expect some optimizations, including enhanced aim assist to level the playing field between controller users and keyboard-and-mouse players. Season 1 is ongoing and includes casual modes like “Outbreak,” a fan-favorite infection-style format.
With its flashy visuals, unpredictable gameplay, and growing popularity, FragPunk is poised to become a standout in the crowded hero shooter genre, especially now that it’s hitting consoles. Whether you’re in it for the laughs, the competition, or the chaos, April 29 is shaping up to be a big day for tactical shooter fans.
