The Royal Navy has launched a cutting-edge esports suite aboard HMS Prince of Wales in partnership with British Esports, enhancing crew morale and promoting skills like leadership, strategy, and teamwork during its global deployment.
In a landmark move that blends modern technology with military innovation, the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy has launched a state-of-the-art esports suite aboard its aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales. This initiative is part of a broader partnership between the Royal Navy, the British Esports Federation (British Esports), and technology partners Dell, Intel, and Alienware.
The new esports facility is equipped with 12 high-performance Alienware Aurora R15 desktop PCs. Each unit is powered by cutting-edge NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards and Intel Core i7 processors, delivering a premium gaming experience on par with top-tier competitive environments. Designed to host esports tournaments and organized leagues, the suite aims to boost morale and foster a sense of community among the ship’s crew during their lengthy missions.
LET(CIS)Spec Victoria Marley, an Esports Committee Member aboard HMS Prince of Wales, highlighted the suite’s impact on crew well-being:
“Having an esports suite available to the ship’s company on Prince of Wales is a massive win for morale. Those who use it can enjoy their hobbies or discover a new one, while at the same time engaging with others outside their usual departmental circles.”

This facility is more than just entertainment; it’s a strategic tool for enhancing vital soft skills. According to Chester King, President of British Esports, gaming in military contexts is increasingly being recognized for its ability to foster communication, strategic thinking, leadership, and teamwork: traits crucial both on the battlefield and in virtual arenas.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defence for this,” King said. “Gaming is becoming increasingly important to the military, as it helps personnel unwind, maintain mental health, and strengthen bonds.”
The esports suite is available to sailors throughout the HMS Prince of Wales’s current global deployment as part of the UK Carrier Strike Group’s eight-month-long Indo-Pacific mission. It joins other on-board leisure and fitness amenities, such as gyms and boxing rings, underscoring the Navy’s commitment to holistic crew welfare.
This collaboration is part of a growing trend of military engagement with gaming. British Esports has been working with the UK armed forces since 2019, and in 2023, the Ministry of Defence officially recognized esports as a military sport. The initiative not only improves quality of life for service members but also reflects a broader governmental push into the gaming industry. Earlier this year, the UK government even advertised a new position for a “Head of Video Games and Esports” to help further national strategy in the sector.
With the launch of this esports suite, HMS Prince of Wales becomes a pioneering platform for blending entertainment, education, and wellbeing, offering a model that could soon be adopted across other branches of the armed forces.
