VALORANT Masters Toronto is officially underway, and North American powerhouse Sentinels have made a strong opening statement with a 2-0 win over VCT China’s Wolves Esports. Meanwhile, Korea’s Gen.G Esports dismantled MIBR in another 2-0 sweep, proving themselves early contenders in the tournament’s Swiss Stage.
Sentinels Overcome Early Scare from Wolves Esports
Despite being considered underdogs, Wolves Esports showed grit in their matchup against Sentinels. The Chinese team’s map pick, Split, saw them take the lead in the first half, ending 8-4 on attack after securing the pistol round and several clutch plays. However, Sentinels bounced back with a refined double-initiator composition and strategic use of ultimates, allowing them to reverse the tide in the second half. The North American squad sealed the map 13-11, led by their superior mid-round adaptation and coordination.
On Lotus, Sentinels demonstrated greater control from the start. Their defensive utility, particularly from Tyson “TenZ” Ngo and Jordan “Zellsis” Montemurro, consistently disrupted Wolves’ plans. Although Wolves mounted a minor defensive comeback, they failed to recover from their weak attacking half. In the second match of the day, Gen.G Esports delivered a surprisingly one-sided victory over MIBR. The Korean squad debuted a unique composition on Lotus, featuring Deadlock as the lone sentinel alongside Omen and Viper as dual controllers. This unconventional setup, combined with disciplined map control, overwhelmed MIBR on defense.
Despite solid individual efforts from MIBR’s Andrew “Verno” Maust on Sova, the team struggled to build momentum. Gen.G closed out Lotus with a commanding 13-5 win after leading 9-3 at halftime.
The domination continued on Gen.G’s map pick, Haven. Employing their trusted Viper-centric strategy, the team relied more on structure than surprise. Ha “Ash” Hyun-cheol delivered consistently lethal plays on Sova, while the rest of the squad maintained relentless pressure. MIBR failed to win any significant rounds outside of the anti-bonus, succumbing to a devastating 1-13 loss.

Following their wins, both Sentinels and Gen.G have advanced to the winner’s bracket in Round 2 of the Swiss Stage, set for June 9th. The matchups are:
